How I Made a Movie Theater Basket Birthday Gift

Sometimes gift giving is easy…and sometimes it isn’t.

When my kids were invited to a friends’ party to celebrate their birthdays, I wanted to give them something they could actually enjoy as a family together instead of another toy that would end up forgotten a few weeks later.

Since they both love going to the movies, and 2026 summer seems to be amazing for movie headlines, I decided to create a movie theater gift basket filled with their favorite candy, popcorn, and a gift card to our local movie theater. To make it even more special, I designed personalized movie tickets with their names so the entire gift felt like they were the stars of the show.

It ended up being one of my favorite gifts I’ve put together because it was simple, personal, and created an experience instead of just another present.

What You’ll Need

  • Popcorn bucket
  • Microwave popcorn
  • Theater candy
  • Peanut M&Ms
  • Sour candy
  • Chocolate
  • Gift card to your local movie theater
  • Crinkle paper
  • Ribbon
  • Personalized movie ticket printable

Why I Love This Gift

This gift is so easy to personalize.

You can choose favorite candies, adjust the budget, or swap the movie theater gift card for a streaming service gift card if you prefer a cozy movie night at home.

The popcorn container also becomes part of the gift, making it something they’ll continue using long after the candy is gone.

How I Put It Together

  1. Fill the bottom of the popcorn bowl with crinkle paper.
  2. Place the largest candy bags in the back to create height.
  3. Add smaller candy toward the front.
  4. Tuck the movie theater gift card where it’s easy to see.
  5. Finish it with a personalized movie ticket and ribbon.

The personalized ticket is what really made the basket feel custom instead of something you could buy off a shelf.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much should I spend on a movie gift basket?

There’s no right answer! Mine can easily be adjusted anywhere from about $20 to $75 depending on the occasion and the gift card amount. This was a gift for two kids so I was right at the top end of this range which averaged about $30 per kid.

Can I make this without a movie theater nearby?

Absolutely. A streaming service gift card works just as well for an at-home movie night.

What candy works best?

I like mixing sweet and sour favorites so there’s something for everyone.

Final Thoughts

One of my favorite parts of gift giving is creating something that feels personal without making it complicated.

This movie theater gift basket came together quickly, but the personalized movie tickets made it feel like it was created just for them.

Sometimes the smallest thoughtful details are the ones people remember the most.
